Keep MRHS Fall Sports Open 2020

We are asking that the Manchester Regional High School BOE keep the Fall 2020 sports open

Why is this important?

On Thursday, August 20th, the Manchester Board of Education voted to cancel all fall sports. This was an item that was not originally on the Board agenda and was not opened to the public prior to the vote occurring. Our community, parents, students and athletes are taking a stand and would like you to sign the petition to return fall sports activities to Manchester Regional High School.

We can not let the Fall 2020 sports activities disappear. The governor has stated that schools going all remote do not need to cancel their fall sports. He himself has said there is no evidence of coronavirus flare ups with outdoor activities. As long as we continue to follow the safe practices of the NJISAA, fall sports will be a safe environment for all involved. Before each practice, we have to complete COVID-19 screening questions, have our temperatures taken when we arrive, wear masks, and maintain social distancing in our assigned areas. We have been doing our part and following all the necessary precautions and this was still taken away from us.

Sports are vitally important for many reasons and there are many benefits to keeping the fall sports (soccer and football) going for this upcoming season. It has been proven that exercise helps physically. Prolonged inactivity can lead to becoming over weight, which can lead to later health issues and being more injury prone. There are also many students that are suffering from lack of physical activity that leads to stress at home. Fall sports allows an outlet for those students who need to relieving stress, anxiety, symptoms of depression and improving their concentration.

These sports help with self esteem and are confidence builders. The students are able to build teamwork and learn leaderships skills. Along with a genuine natural stress reliever, especially in a time when the current all virtual life is extremely stressful for everyone. We also look to the students who need an escape from their home lives, for varying reasons. Sports are able to give them a way to get away from their tough home situations.

Also, we look to help freshman feel more connected with the school they are spending the next 4 years in. Fall sports is what gives them another athlete to talk who knows the school and a friend it also gives them a teacher or coach to build a relationship with. And let’s not forget our seniors that may never get another chance to play again after this. This may be the last chance they have to get recognized for an award, a scholarship, or to even break a record.

We’ve already lost so much due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s not lose this to. Please help us by signing our petition to keep 2020 fall sports open.
