To: Kevin de Leon, US Senate candidate, California State Senator

Dear Sen. Kevin de Leon: Please Speak Up For Khan al-Ahmar

Join Congressional Democrats (including Senator Dianne Feinstein) and members of the international community in calling on the Israeli military to cease its planned and imminent demolition of the Palestinian village of Khan al-Ahmar and condemn the further illegal expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank.

Why is this important?

Dear Senator Kevin de Leon,

On September 5, 2018, the Israeli High Court of Justice rejected petitions from residents of the Palestinian Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, effectively approving the imminent Israeli military-led eviction and demolition of the village at any point after September 12, 2018.

This comes after the passage of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 (2016) which condemned "all measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, including, inter alia, the construction and expansion of settlements, transfer of Israeli settlers, confiscation of land, demolition of homes and displacement of Palestinian civilians, in violation of international humanitarian law and relevant resolutions."

On September 16, 2018, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov stated:

"I am concerned at the intention of the Israeli authorities to demolish the Bedouin village of Khan Al-Ahmar/Abu Al-Helu, a community of 181 people, over half of which are children. I call on the authorities not to proceed with the demolition and to cease efforts to relocate Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank. Such actions are contrary to international law and could undermine the chances for the establishment of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state.”

As someone who may potentially represent California — the nation’s most populous state — in the United States Senate, we feel it is important that your voice be present in the conversations around Khan al-Ahmar and the potential violations of international law if the demolition is allowed to go through.

We ask that you please join your opponent, Senator Dianne Feinstein (issued the following tweet on September 13, 2018: "Israel must not demolish the Palestinian community of Khan al Ahmar. The only reason to destroy this community is to expand nearby Israeli settlements and split the West Bank in half. The potential for peace depends on what happens to Khan al Ahmar."), in issuing a statement condemning the destruction of Palestinian villages (including Khan al-Ahmar) and the expansion of illegal Israel settlements in the West Bank.

We also ask that you would please communicate said statement to the United States Department of State and the Israeli Embassy to the United States.

Let's stand together for human rights!
