Make ASL more common in school
I have been researching the situation that ASL is not a norm or usually foriegn language school curriculum. ASL (American Sign Language) it's a very important thing and one of the most commonly used languages in America, even though barely anybody knows it. This is a really big situation for a lot of people because of it, deaf, mute, and people on the spectrum. It ranges from being not able to speak to them and communicating to them feeling left out because we can’t communicate to them. Continuing on with reasons on why we can't thoroughly communicate with people who need ASL to speak is certain people don't have the materials to learn though if it was part of the curriculum and was provided by the school there wouldn't be such a language barrier. Another being family, how would you feel if you couldn't communicate with your nephew? Most families don't have the materials and once they are adults our brains process language much slower while our brains while still developing can understand and comprehend the language much better. They also would have motivation to have good grades and there would be materials for them to learn. Lastly, there's a barrier in the work community with the people who use ASL as their main language. There's research showing they have more flexible schedules and have better work performance yet we cant speak with them very well. This has impacted us greatly and they can't have normal conversations. There's a barrier when speaking with them. Also, it stunts their growth and our growth in the future the more we could have a good communication with them. You have the most power in our situation right now with being part of the curriculum board members you can choose to petition this or even make it an option at your school. SOme solutions might be making it a usual school foriegn language. The government could make it a need by the school to have it in some way be offered like a club or an actual class. Community could sign a petition for making it a class.
Why is this important?
ASL is such a large broad group yet it barley taught and can change a-lot things for people if it was a regular taught.
