MaskUp America: we the people must unite in favor of 100-days of masking

Wearing masks is very important and saves lives. The 46th President, on the day he was inaugurated, issued an executive order for federal workers to wear masks for 100 days and has extended the order to include interstate travels.

What does this mean to the public? In every state we have federal employees and also we travel freely from one state to another. Therefore, to get rid of the virus people must comply with this order regardless of where we work. If we do not we become super spreaders.

This executive order has multiple benefits. It will help us move away from the misinformation and disinformation we received from the previous administration. We were given faulty testing kits, we were told wearing masks was not necessary and we were given wrong information regarding vaccine distributions. Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman said, “…Words matter”.

This executive order was designed to undo what the previous administration did but let us not forget that it is too late for many. By the day the 46th President was inaugurated, more than 400,000 of our fellow citizens had passed away. The previous administration’s White House Taskforce did not start its press briefing sessions by paying tribute to those they were not able to save but the 46th President, the First Lady, the Vice President and the Second Gentleman started their day by paying tribute to their fellow citizens who passed away. They reintroduced empathy and we must welcome them with open arms. Pandemics have no politics. Pandemics are our common enemy and when we have common enemies we unit. Let us wear masks for the next 100 days.

We must not be part of the problem but the solution. While we can forgive mistakes, we must not forget how inappropriately and incompetently the pandemic was handled by the previous administration and the White House covid task force. Even where they succeed in fast tracking the launch of vaccines, we were behind China, Russia, India and the UK in approving life saving vaccines. It took three weeks for FDA to give the green light to Pfizer when it should have taken just 3 hours because the formula was known and the trials were completed.

To turn this around we must comply with the 100 days of wearing masks. It is a matter of life and death. In time of pandemics, collective rights supersede individual rights. Who among us want to be remembered as someone who defied logic and commonsense and as a super spreader? We are now number one in COVID-19 prevalence and deaths. We stand #37 in life expectancy in global rankings. While other countries are surging ahead we are stuck at average life expectancy age 79. Taiwan had suffered 7 deaths from COVID-19 - and they feel bad about it! Singapore and Hong Kong have been distributing free N95 masks and have contained the virus. New Zealand has managed to eradicate the virus. What have we been doing and what have we missed? Unlike the previous administration, the 46th President and his experts knew that masks saved lives. Let us wear masks for the next 100 days.

Why does this matter?

1. The Biden/Harris administration will have a lot to undo and will have to turn the ship around quickly. There is hope only if the public embrace the new executive order and wear masks for the next 100 days.

2. Inaugural speeches are aspirational but we can judge Presidents by the words they chose as those words do reveal who they are. Read the 46th President’s inaugural speech over and over again. Words do matter and read Ms. Amanda German’s poet as well.

3. If we wear masks for 100 days we will not get sick. Other countries who wear masks have much lower prevalence of COVID-19. If we can reduce the incidence of the virus in 100 days by wearing masks we owe it to each other to comply.

Thank you for wearing masks,
