MAYORS: Take the Pledge

The nation is mourning and protesting the unconscionable death of yet another African-American at the hands of the police department. While it is clear that the community of Mercer Island is grieving, it is also clear that we are deeply committed to translating this grief into action.
President Obama has called on the mayors in our country to sign a pledge to review their use of force policies, report its findings publicly, and seek community feedback within 90 days of signing the pledge. There are data driven, evidence-based police reform policies that can lead to better outcomes and prevent death, keeping both our police and community safer. Our community can benefit from the research and expertise that President Obama's foundation, My Brother's Keeper has to offer.

Why is this important?

As Mercer Island residents, we call on you to take this pledge alongside so many other mayors who want to change and heal the injustices that have been happening for far too long. We need and want to be leading this change.

By taking the pledge through https://www.obama.org/mayor-pledge/, you will:
1. REVIEW your police use of force policies.
2. ENGAGE your communities by including a diverse range of input, experiences, and stories in your review.
3. REPORT the findings of your review to your community and seek feedback.
4. REFORM your community’s police use of force policies.
