Medical Professionals: Call to Action
We are writing to appeal to the AMA to honor its stated mission, “to promote the betterment of public health.” During this challenging time there is no greater public health issue today than educating the public about Covid and explaining the urgency to mitigate Covid’s impact with masks, distancing and vaccinations. This responsibility is only more crucial now as the US, and the world, face a new variant that appears to be swallowing our societies whole.
To date, many public personalities have communicated considerable misinformation about the disease which has undermined the dictates of how science suggests that we address the disease. Worse still, lately, at least two physicians have publicly spoken untruths about the disease, giving even greater credibility to efforts that erode the known and proven tactics of public health mitigation.
The AMA must bring to the fore the professionalism and respect it has earned through years of doctoring and must publicly embrace and bolster the virology science underpinning the mitigation efforts our government is trying to adopt for the life sake of our population. Putting information on your website is insufficient- the AMA must proactively engage the media, boldly, proactively and often.
By being a bystander at this pivotal time the AMA is creating a dangerous threat to our society, not only with respect to Covid but by undermining the rightful place of science and facts within the public discourse of dealing with a virus. The AMA must help our government establish the imperative to follow facts and proven science, for the sake of our future.
‘DO NO HARM’ are the watchwords of your profession. They go beyond the individual treatment. They surely include a prohibition against actively ignoring a burgeoning public health threat and actively failing to publicly advocate on behalf of the medical facts. Moreover, facts are not political- avoiding this issue as being ‘political’ gives further lie to the notion that there are not scientific facts at the heart of this discussion. There are no politics in supporting antibiotics for infections. Similarly, there are no politics in supporting the mitigation methods needed at this crucial time in our lives.
Many of us look to you, our medical leaders, for this help. Please join your unique voice with our government’s efforts to save the lives of our friends and family. Thank you in advance for your caring.

Why is this important?
We need to come together with the government's efforts to stamp down this virus, and save the lives of our neighbors and family, and save our economy which is being destroyed by this plague. We did it, and sacrificed personal freedoms, during the world wars, this is no different.
