Modifications to The Ohio State University Math 1152 Curriculum

The students of Math 1152 would like to request that we are given the opportunity to raise our grades in some capacity. Some equitable opportunities that we as students have curated and believe will effectively and positively impact our standing in the class are as follows.

1. Corrections on the in-class portion of midterms. We believe that this would be beneficial in regards to our grade on the examinations and that it is an exceptional opportunity to further our learning and understanding of the material.

2. Curve on either individual examinations or the class as the whole. We believe that the use of the curve is just as it considers the average standing of all the students as a whole. Additionally, most STEM courses at The Ohio State University utilize a curve at the latter part of the semester.

3. More Extra Oppurtunites. We believe that extra opportunities are fair as students are accordingly taking the initiative to put more work into the course to raise their grades. In addition, the course syllabus for Math 1152 states, "A few opportunities for extra credit will be given this semester. The weight for these will be listed on the projects and be included into the course AFTER the final exam." We have not been given any extra credit opportunities as stated that we would in the syllabus.

4. Optional Final Exam Review is graded for points. Before each exam, we are provided with past assessments to utilize during our studying. We believe that those who take the time to diligently prepare using these resources should be able to turn them in and receive some form of credit, whether in the form of extra credit, factored into homework, or factored into the review portion of our total grade.

Why is this important?

We believe that being given opportunities to raise our standing in the course is critical due to the events that have transpired with Dr.Pengitore that have all in all created an environment that is not conducive to learning or the success of students. Specifically, we believe that the mean and median scores of Midterm examination three and Midterm examination four, which both hovered around 50%, are entirely indicative of the shared struggles among the students of the course. Scores as low as these on a midterm can and likely will have a significant impact on student's grades in the course and, accordingly, their future educational aspirations as it may derail their goals. Thus, we believe for those that are inclined and willing to put in further time and effort into the course in order to raise their grade should be able to so.
