No new immigrant detention center in Minnesota!
The Department of Homeland Security is planning to repurpose a private prison in Appleton, Minnesota, for the Trump administration’s inhumane and chaotic mass deportation agenda. The private prison—owned by CoreCivic—would serve as an immigrant detention camp and incarcerate up to 1,600 people. It could even cruelly detain children and families, similar to other CoreCivic facilities. .
Minnesota was among the states targeted by Trump’s campaign of terror earlier this year—without thousands of residents mobilizing to hold Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accountable for their unlawfulness, harassment, abuse, and murder.
Demand local leaders do everything in their power to block this development—and make it clear to DHS that the public opposes a new immigrant detention center built in Minnesota!
Why is this important?
During Operation Metro Surge, ICE agents terrorized Minnesota residents and murdered peaceful observers Alex Pretti and Renee Good. People came together to mourn the tremendous and traumatic loss, and continued to organize to protect and defend their neighbors against ICE’s abuse.
But now, Trump is once again attacking Minnesotans, with sights set on an immigrant detention center that will allow his mass deportation agenda to ramp up.
CoreCivic, who would likely operate the detention center, runs roughly 80 detention centers across the country—including the Dilley Processing Center that has come under fire for detaining children in subpar conditions, including 5-year-old Liam Conejo-Ramos.
Just last month, CoreCivic was sanctioned by a judge for destroying evidence after a man died in ICE custody in a facility owned by CoreCivic—and it’s not the first time they have been known to overwrite video evidence. And CoreCivic detention camps have also been accused of failing to address sexual assault, abuse, medical neglect, spoiled food, and other cruel and unlawful conditions.
We have to stop the expansion of Trump’s inhumane and disgusting immigrant detention agenda—and we can start by delaying, blocking, and opposing the new Appleton detention camp.
