Governor DeWine...VETO Senate Bill 175 (Stand Your Ground: Shoot First, Analyze Later Law)

The Dayton Unit NAACP is strongly opposed to SB 175 the proposed Stand Your Ground, Shoot First Legislation. Black men and women are often perceived as being more suspicious, threatening, and dangerous than people of other races. This has been the basis for the unjustified shooting deaths of Beyonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Pamela Turner, Trayvon Martin, and countless other African Americans that have been shot and killed.

Dear Governor Mike DeWine,

As a concerned citizen of Dayton, I respectfully request that you veto SB 175. This legislation will increase unwarranted shootings which could lead to loss of life. With mass shootings and school shootings happening across this country, the legislature needs to focus on passing meaningful gun legislation to put measures in place to protect all citizens of this great Buckeye State of Ohio.

I appreciate your consideration in advance.

Warmest Regards,

Member/Supporter/Friend of the Dayton Unit NAACP

Why is this important?

If Stand Your Ground legislation becomes law, this type of implicit bias will have a tremendously negative impact on communities of color and will result in the deaths of more African Americans. Blacks are frequently perceived as a threat solely on the fact that they have darker skin. Stand Your Ground legislation will justify the murder of innocent people, particularly innocent Black people whose suspicion is actually based on racial prejudice, racial hatred, racial perceptions, and race based intersectionality - none of which have any basis in fact.
