House Bill 235 will make it illegal for women to obtain an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The fetal heartbeat is usually detected when a woman is around six weeks pregnant. Women typically discover within four to seven weeks that they are pregnant, according to the American Pregnancy Association.
Why is this important?
Protect women's right and autonomy over their bodies. This bill will be considered during the next legislative session which begins in early March and will likely pass if we don't make our voices heard.
Republican lawmakers argue that a fetus is a "functioning human being." A fetus is not a "functioning human being" as it cannot survive outside the womb. Typically a pregnancy is not viable outside of the womb until at least 24 weeks.
