We, the parents and guardians of the incoming second-grade class at Donaldson Elementary School, 2021-2022 school year, noticed that our teachers were overwhelmed with their class sizes when our children were in kindergarten. Classroom management became the focus and for much of the year and it affected the education our children received. While our teachers did their best, it was clear that their burden was heavy. This was less of a concern with many students learning from home last year but, with most returning to in-person instruction, it is once again a significant consideration. We urge you to add a fifth second-grade class for the 2021-2022 school year. Our students and teachers deserve smaller class sizes during an already difficult and transitional year. Thank you for your time and consideration!
Why is this important?
With smaller class sizes, our teachers will be able to focus more of their attention on the specific needs of their students. With many children just returning to in-person instruction, this will already be a more difficult adjustment than most years. Teachers will need to be able to assess and address the needs of each student so they can get everyone on the same page to move forward, much like kindergarten. Large class sizes are also a safety concern. Our classrooms are large enough to fit about 23 students when spaced 6 feet apart. Our children need to be properly spaced for COVID safety.
