Petition to Appeal the USTA Friend at Court Committee Decision for Mixed and Combo State Playoffs

Due to the interpretation in Friend at Court of the amount of rest players are required between matches in a tournament by USTA National, USTA Southern’ s Adult League committee voted to only allow players to advance on one team at Mixed and Combo Sectionals. The USTA South Carolina Adult League Committee voted to follow USTA Southern and only allow players to advance on one State Championship events that take place on the same weekend. This regulation change will begin with the Mixed Championships August 25-28 in Lexington, SC.

This Petition seeks to overturn this decision and let all players who advance to State Playoffs to make their own decisions as it relates to playing on multiple teams at the same NTRP Level. It is discriminatory, specifically ageist in nature, as it only applies to players over 40 and playing on teams at the same level.

Different NTRP level players who advance are still able to play on multiple teams, therefore so should all players regardless of age or level. Players should be allowed to make their own decisions and manage their own schedules if they have earned the right to compete at State Playoffs for Mixed and Combo Seasons.

Why is this important?

Change that benefits the collective and represents the majority is always welcome. However, change that categorically benefits no individual or group and specifically targets an age group detrimentally should not be allowed. These decisions should be more representative of all members of the USTA and any changes should only be considered by the Committee, if it benefits the majority of its members, without discrimination.
