Petition to change the KDO Academy Dress Code

On March 29, 2022, the KDO Academy board sent out a new dress code that has upset the majority of the student body. This petition asks the KDO Academy board to revert back to the previous dress code. Several main points of the dress code that are motivators for this petition include the banning of "alternative styles" and the restrictions concerning makeup, footwear, and jewelry. Firstly, KDO has decided to ban an entire style of clothing, alternative clothing, which includes "emo, goth, grunge, etc." This is a direct target on a small group of individuals within the student body, who the board seemingly looks down upon for the way that they dress. Alternative dressing is simply characterized by wearing darker colors and some eyeshadow, which is something that has absolutely no impact on the learning environment, let alone anyone else. High school students receive so much scrutiny already by their peers. They absolutely do not need more judgment on the way that dress by the board. Please note: the alternative clothing being spoken about was within the parameters of the previous dress code. Secondly, this new dress code has updated rules pertaining to the use of jewelry and makeup. Directly from the new dress code: "Jewelry must be modest- no heavy chains, oversized earrings (with symbols or graphics), studded bracelets/necklaces are not allowed (this includes animal style collars or chokers of any kind)" Again, wearing jewelry does not affect anyone outside of the person wearing it. It is no business of anyone else if a student wishes to wear a chain, choker, or earrings. The same goes for makeup, it should be completely up to the student and the student alone the amount of makeup they wish to wear. I will add that there are many teachers at KDO who would not pass this same requirement. Makeup is used to make girls feel more confident, what is so wrong with that? Finally, I would like to point out how disproportionately this new code affects girls vs. boys. The girls have an endless list of rules that they need to follow, while the guys are basically expected to wear clothes, take care of their hair, and not wear makeup. Something needs to change to make this dress code more reasonable, less judgmental, and more equal. Thank you for your time.

Why is this important?

This is affecting so many of my fellow students who feel as though they are being shamed by this new dress code. I care about this issue because it is affecting my friends, and I can't just sit back and watch it happen. If it makes my friends uncomfortable, I'm choosing to do something about it to try and change it. Please join me in bringing about this change.
