Petition to Expand Composting on Campus
The University of Louisville (UofL) has used compostable packaging material in the Marketplace for many years; however, students do not have anywhere to properly dispose of this. In the end, all of the money going towards compostable materials is wasted because they all go to the landfill. We are asking UofL, along with help from student volunteers, to expand compost collection in the Marketplace during peak hours, such as lunch and dinner. Additionally, we want to begin composting used paper towels in bathrooms across campus. Paper towel waste adds up quickly and contributes to a large part of the overall waste created on campus. Composting paper towels will divert this waste from the landfill into a sustainable form of waste management.
Why is this important?
Composting organic waste is one more way the University of Louisville (UofL) can divert waste from the landfill. Since 2013, UofL has been working to reduce its waste, and expanding composting will be the next step in this process.
On top of this, composting will reduce carbon emissions created by our waste. When organic materials are thrown into the landfill, they are forced to decompose without oxygen, which produces methane, a greenhouse gas much stronger than carbon dioxide. UofL has stated that it is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and composting is one solution.
