Plea to select Republicans

I am reaching out to you because I believe you are an honorable person in a position to help save this democracy and this country.  While the Marjorie Taylor Greens, the Mitch McConnells, the Josh  Hawleys et al. have abandoned the country, you have shown the courage to at least question some of Donald Trump’s more dangerous actions.

I believe you must know that what is happening in our country today - the blatant take-over and gutting of our government by Elon Musk (neither elected nor vetted) who has been handed the keys by Donald Trump, is undemocratic, dangerous and wrong.

People ask why no Republicans are calling this out or standing up, and there seem to be two answers.  One, fear of being primaried, and two, fear of personal reprisals.  To the first, I’d say, so be primaried.  You were elected to do good during your term.  If you do so, and save this country, then even if you are primaried, at least history will tell that you stood up for what is right and against what is wrong.  And isn’t it likely that if you and enough of your colleagues stand against that which is unlawful and unconstitutional, you will earn the loyalty and gratitude of your constituents while at the same time, defanging Donald Trump’s power to threaten?

The second fear is more difficult, of course, because if you or your loved ones are under threat, that is terrifying indeed.  But what I would say is that we can only stop bullies by standing up to them, and if you stand up, you will find that there are many, many people ready to stand with you.

In “The Hill” just after the election, Brian Darling, a former aide to Sen. Rand Paul said that, [we’re] “...not going to see candidates, Republican candidates, outwardly oppose Trump because they see the Liz Cheney example. Her career was destroyed because she went against Trump.”  But what if you were to stand for democracy, to stand for what is right, to stand for the rule of law?  I believe people will rally behind you, and I know that history will remember you as one who had the courage to speak up when others cowered in fear.

Mitch McConnell ignored his opportunity to stop this madness.  You are someone who has some power to rein it in.  Please, please take this opportunity to do what is patriotic, to do what is right.

Why is this important?

It seems like we should be able to persuade those Republicans who have in some way spoken out about Trump in the past or currently to find the courage to speak out now to try to stop his illegal, unconstitutional actions.
