To: Valerie Plante, Mayor of Montreal

Please Keep Your Pledge Mayor Plante

Mayor Plante pledged to keep the agglomeration tax increase in line with the cost of living, and didn’t live up to her word. In the case of one suburb Mayor Plante actually increased it by 9.8%, four times the rate of inflation!! We ask that Mayor Plante live up to her pledge and keep tax increases down at the promised level of inflation. RHONDA MASSAD

Why is this important?

We represent 246,000 Montreal Island residents who pay on average 50% or close to $410 million of their municipal taxes to the Agglomeration of Montreal, EVERY YEAR. The system in place does not allow these residents to vote for the Mayor of Montreal nor does it give any real power to the demerged elected officials who sit on the Agglomeration Council. Montreal’s Plante-Dorais administration’s new budget brings in tax hikes that are, on average, twice as high as in previous years and nearly six times the inflation rate for some of the Island’s municipalities!
Budget growth must not exceed the inflation rate, which was one of the promises of the new administration.

We are supporting our 14 Mayors who have asked to partner with Mayor Plante and help her and her team revise the budget in such a way as to ensure a balanced result.

We are also standing united as we ask the provincial government to revise the system that is unfair to all demerged cities who have little to say about how their tax dollars are disbursed.
We want a democratic vote as residents who pay dearly to the Island of Montreal. The time has come for change. We want our say in who is elected in Montreal if we are to pay half of our taxes to the city.

The Montreal Island suburban municipalities linked to the City of Montreal represent the third largest population in Quebec (246,000 Census Canada 2011) and the second largest economic power.

These municipalities include Baie-D’Urfé, Beaconsfield, Côte-Saint-Luc, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Dorval, Hampstead, Kirkland, Dorval Island, Town of Mount Royal, Montreal East, Montreal West, Pointe-Claire, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Senneville, and Westmount.
