During the visit of the Pope and his address to Congress, and in response to the Pope's call for world wide commitment to help refugees, we, the undersigned, urge President Obama and Congress to demonstrate our compassion as a people by making a national commitment to:
1) Take in at least 100,000 Syrian asylum seekers;
2) Immediately open US military facilities in Germany and elsewhere as temporary reception and processing centers for these refugees and open centers in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey; and
3) Establish a means by which Americans can pledge publicly to sponsor Syrian refugee families when they arrive in the United States.
Why is this important?
As immigrant Americans, we would like to influence our government's response to this humanitarian crisis.
