Protect our Democratic Republic, Wayne County NY
On January 6, 2021, a violent mob of citizens stormed the U.S. Capitol intending to overthrow the election results of 2020. These angry men and women were led to believe that the 2020 election had been stolen. The insurrection was incited and planned by powerful individuals who demand a return to power but have been unable to prove their claims of election fraud in any court of law.
Since then, an active campaign of doubt and fear continues. Those who incited the insurrection have tried to block the Congressional investigation into the January 6 violence. In various states, local election officials who certified their election counts have faced death threats. Nineteen states have enacted laws that will make it harder for Americans to vote. Rallies and media continually support the illegal reinstatement of the former President. Here in Wayne County, we have witnessed similar division and rancor growing in our local communities.
During the week of January 6, 2022, Americans across the country will join vigils to reaffirm their faith in the 2020 election and denounce division and hatred in our country. In support of those vigils, we have created a petition to gather Wayne County voices in unity against the rhetoric that divides us. We, the undersigned, present this petition to you our Wayne County Supervisors and our NYS Representatives. Each of you was chosen through free and fair elections and are now entrusted with the health and well-being of our communities. We ask that you endorse this petition in a public statement.
Your endorsements will begin to restore good will among our neighbors and a renewed faith in our democratic elections. This petition and your endorsements will also be an incentive for Congressman Katko and our U.S. Senators to step up and ensure the passage of this critical legislation in Washington D.C.

Why is this important?
To banish the fear and doubt that now surrounds our elections and protect free and open voter access, we reject the unfounded claims of a stolen 2020 election and support the following proposed federal legislation which will protect our democratic republic in the future:
• The Freedom to Vote Act is the most significant voting rights and anti-corruption bill in generations. It will protect the freedom to vote for all Americans, stop partisan gerrymandering, limit the influence of dark money so that billionaires can’t buy elections, and prevent partisan politicians from sabotaging future elections. https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/freedom-vote-act
• The Protecting Our Democracy Act is a historic pro-democracy-for-all package. It will create and strengthen guardrails to prevent the abuse of presidential power and restore fundamental checks and balances in our government. https://www.brennancenter.org/our- work/analysis-opinion/house-passes-protecting-our-democracy-act-brennan-center-reacts
• The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act restores and strengthens our freedom to vote by making sure that any changes to voting rules that could discriminate against voters based on our race or background are federally reviewed. Thus, we will all have an equal say in our future since our rights will be protected. https://www.brennancenter.org/our- work/research-reports/john-lewis-voting-rights-advancement-act
