It is time to repair the breach of racism that continues to divide the United States: In addition to Congress apologizing for slavery, as was done in 2008 and 2009, Congress should also pave the way for voluntary reparations to be paid to the descendants of those captured during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. A national Jubilee Lottery can generate the funds to pay reparations without increasing taxes or the national deficit.
Why is this important?
I am the President of the Reparations Labor Union and a descendant of Africans captured during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The year 2019 marks the 400th anniversary of America's involvement in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. America should immediately enact voluntary reparations in order to turn a grievous anniversary into a celebration of truth, correction, and reconciliation.
