During Donald Trump’s inauguration, tech billionaire Elon Musk—who spent more than $250 million to help elect Trump—gave a speech to the crowd in which he gestured, twice, with what resembled a Nazi salute. He has doubled down since the backlash, attending a rally for the far-right Alternative for Germany and urging them to “move on” from the guilt of the past as well as posting offensive puns on X.
Donald Trump has yet to rebuke Elon Musk for his gesture or subsequent actions—so the billionaire will once again evade any accountability for his actions. Meanwhile, a meteorologist at Milwaukee's CBS 58 station was fired for a post she made on her private Instagram page criticizing Musk.
It should go without saying that individuals should NOT be punished for speaking out against Nazis or even simply expressing opposition to billionaires on their private social media accounts.

Why is this important?
Since Donald Trump’s rise to political power, the U.S. has seen an increase in far-right, extremist, neo-Nazi, and white supremacist movements. In fact, 2023 was the second record-breaking year in a row for reports of white supremacist incidents, and hundreds of neo-Nazi marches and rallies have cropped up across the country.
But instead of rebuking these hate groups, Elon Musk is emboldening them by refusing to denounce any association caused—intentionally or unintentionally—by his salute, and instead posting Holocaust jokes online.
Independent media outlets should not cower at the prospect of far-right backlash or punish everyday citizens who privately speak out against hate. And nearly 90% of readers who took a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel poll agree.
