Remove Rep. Gillette for his disturbing and violent remarks against Congresswoman Jayapal

In a time of increased political violence, it is the duty and responsibility of every single elected official to be lowering the temperature and calling for—and embodying—nonviolence. Instead, Arizona Republican Representative John Gillette posted online calling for U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal's execution.

This is unconscionable and should be cause for his immediate removal from this position. That violent rhetoric puts not only Rep. Jayapal in danger but also every single American.

Add your name to the petition to demand the Arizona House move swiftly to uphold the standards of elected office and hold Rep. Gillette accountable.

Why is this important?

In response to a post sharing a video clip of Rep. Jayapal, Rep. Gillette violently said that people like her should be “tried, convicted, and hanged.”  In the clip, Rep. Jayapal speaks in support of nonviolent protest against the Trump administration.

A majority of Americans are concerned about political violence. And, as the Trump administration attacks free speech and freedom to protest, it is as important as ever to stand up for the right of everyday Americans to speak out against their government without fear of violence or retaliation.

Remarks like Rep. Gillette's can stoke extremism and intimidate people out of exercising their First Amendment rights. They violate the House rules. And they demonstrate a complete disregard for the safety and well-being of the people he is sworn to serve.

Sign the petition to show that the American people reject this kind of violent rhetoric from our elected officials, and to demand that the Arizona House reject it as well.
