To: Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)
Rep. Becerra, we want you to help overturn Citizens United
Congressman Becerra, we urge you to stand up for the founding principles of our great nation by co-sponsoring an amendment to overturn Citizens United and rein in corporate power in our democracy.
Why is this important?
As of July 2, Sixteen US States have adopted a resolution to pursue an amendment to the Constitution of The United States, which would overturn the Citizens United decision. This petition is to urge California Congressman Xavier Becerra (34th District) to support a similar resolution in California by embodying the voice of his constituents.
We have all been affected by the Citizens United decision, which has allowed unlimited funding to influence elections of government representatives at every level of government. This money is contributed in the shadows, with no accountability, so the people are unable to even discern whom amongst the super rich and multinational corporations are sponsoring a specific candidate.
President Lincoln, in his Gettysburg Address, proclaimed that "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". The Citizens United decision represents a barrier to this ideal, creating a system where government is sold to the highest bidder, while the common person's voice is silenced. This nearly insurmountable barrier must be eradicated through a Constitutional Amendment, for the very preservation of our Democracy.
