To: Rep. John Yarmuth (KY-3)
Rep. Yarmuth: Please Oppose Cuts to Social Security
Please oppose "chained CPI" and other proposed cuts to Social Security, and support more common-sense reforms instead.
Why is this important?
Two-thirds of seniors rely on Social Security for more than half of their income, as do 3.2 million disabled veterans and 350,000 children and surviving spouses.
The President's proposed cuts to Social Security through "chained CPI" will have a drastic effect on these groups, no less since a greater-than-average amount of their spending goes to health care, costs for which are outpacing even normal inflation measures.
There are more logical and less painful ways of reforming Social Security, such as raising the cap on income subject to the payroll tax. What we should NOT do is hide behind deficit fear-mongering to make cuts to this immensely popular program, especially since Social Security hasn't added a single penny to the deficit.
Please join me in encouraging Representative Yarmuth to oppose chained CPI and any other cuts to Social Security, and to support more common-sense reforms instead.
