EQUITABLE PROTECTION FOR SAWTELLE JAPANTOWN PETITION

We the undersigned, stakeholders of Council District 11, petition the office of Councilwoman Traci Park and the Los Angeles Department of City Planning to:

1.) Equitably and effectively represent our community by ISSUING A PUBLIC STATEMENT calling on Mayor Bass to amend Executive Directive 1 to provide equal protection for Sawtelle Japantown’s cultural-historic core (sub-areas WLA 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the WLA Community Plan Update Draft) as expressly extended on July 7, 2023 to R-1 neighborhoods, the majority of which historically discriminated against Japanese families from home ownership, by providing an exemption for named cultural districts;

2.) Initiate immediately the historical preservation overlay zone process for the historic core of Sawtelle Japantown by issuing an Interim Control Ordinance that would afford this area the same protection as other designated historic-cultural districts;

3.) Safeguard our community from displacement by redirecting Sawtelle’s State-mandated residential densification to the periphery of Japantown’s historic-cultural core, the area west of the Bundy Corridor encompassing sub-areas WLA 3, 11, 52 and 55 as identified in the WLA Community Plan Update Draft and rezoning these to Hybrid Industrial (live-work) districts.
