To: Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer

Step Down as Minority Leader!

Trump and the Republican Party are doubling health care premiums, weaponizing our military against us, and ripping food away from children.

We need Democratic leaders who won’t cave, who won’t back down, and who will serve as a forceful opposition party,  guarding against the worst of this administration’s attacks and providing a path toward reclaiming our country, democracy, and freedom.

Chuck Schumer is not that leader.

It’s time for Schumer to step down from his post as minority leader and allow for new leadership to emerge—someone who is willing to consistently fight for the American people.

Why is this important?

Renewed calls for Schumer to step down as minority leader followed the disastrous decision by eight Democratic senators to vote to reopen the government—with no concessions on the issues that sparked the government shutdown in the first place.

The grueling government shutdown was the longest in U.S. history, and the lines were clear: Democrats, empowered by our grassroots movement, stepped up to hold the line and protect Americans from skyrocketing health care costs. Republicans, on the other hand, were steadfast in blocking action to address rising health care costs and instead used the shutdown to inflict maximum pain on the American people. They stopped SNAP payments, furloughed federal employees, and nearly halted air travel by withholding pay from air traffic controllers and TSA agents.

Poll after poll shows that Americans supported Democrats for driving a hard bargain to protect ACA subsidies, and a majority blamed Republicans and President Trump for the shutdown.

But Schumer and Senate Democrats sold the American people out, leaving millions of families left without guarantees of affordable health care through the ACA and sending a message to Trump that his bullying, abuse, and cruelty will go unchecked.

This is not the leadership that the American people want or deserve. Schumer must step down from his position as minority leader and allow new leadership to step up in order to listen to and deliver for the people.
