We urge swift passage of the HARKIN-DEFAZIO WALL STREET SPECULATOR’S TAX ACT which targets high-volume, high-speed speculators while exempting retirement and educational savings. This tax of $3.00 per $10,000 traded (0.03%): 1. Provides significant TAX REVENUE ($350 Billion/9 years); 2. Cools super-computer trading for MARKET STABILITY; 3. Curbs OIL and FOOD speculation to calm wild swings in consumer costs; 4. Creates a DODGE-PROOF TAX so Wall Street pays their fair share; 5. Rewards LONG-TERM INVESTMENT, not short-term profit-taking; and 6. PAYS BACK the American people for bailing them out at taxpayer’s expense.

We petition the Obama administration to: Immediately address the issue of gun control through the introduction of legislation in Congress. The goal of this petition is to force the Obama Administration to produce legislation that limits access to guns, especially semi-automatic, military-style ones – and ammunition clips holding more than 5-10 rounds. While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths. Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution's intended purpose of the right to bear arms. Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve.

Article I, section 5 of the United States Constitution provides that "Each House [of Congress] may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member." We hereby implore the United States Senate to be unanimous and swift in the expulsion of Ted Cruz from the U.S. Senate for his recent dereliction of duty, along with his failure of leadership and action during a recent time of life and death crisis within his constituency during a deadly winter storm. To say this was disorderly behaviour would be generous to Cruz. To say his actions were cowardly, selfish, stupid, and worthy of expulsion are an undeniable fact as predicated by the most basic ethical tenets of public office.

A thoughtful, balanced, well-vetted design plan for the renovation/addition of Cabot School has been developed through an open, collaborative process. This design meets the state’s educational requirements, offers new opportunities for shared community use of the school’s resources, preserves the original building structure, and limits the impact of the new addition on the abutting neighbors. The design was approved by the Cabot School Building Committee (CSBC) on April 5, 2016. We urge the Building Project Team and the Newton City Council to vote in support of this fully developed, approved schematic design and move it forward through the next phase of the approval process for its submission to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). Delays to reconsider old design options would incur significant expense but offer no substantial benefit to the community.
