A West Virginia mother, Tiffany Redman, wrote to us about how HB 4588 would have affected her family: In December 2006, days after she and her husband shared the exciting news of her long-awaited pregnancy, Tiffany suffered a terrifying episode of bleeding. After losing all of her amniotic fluid, she was diagnosed with a condition called placenta previa. She wrote: "This meant the fetus was no longer viable and that I could go into labor at any minute, and at risk of bleeding to death. We were devastated." The pregnancy was terminated days after the 20-week mark. Said Tiffany: "My situation was tragic but I was fortunate to have had the ability to make this decision with my family and physicians. I learned firsthand this is not a decision for politicians to make." Every pregnancy is different and no one can presume to know all of the circumstances surrounding a personal, medical decision to have an abortion. A woman should not be denied basic health care because some politicians do not like her decision. We urge you to oppose House Bill 4588.
