  • Disqualify Donald Trump in Maine
The Constitution’s 14th Amendment provides for the disqualification from office of any person who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the United States. That includes Donald Trump. As a result, he does not meet the qualifications to become president again. Election officials in every state must respect the Constitution and reject Trump from their ballots. And Congress can help clarify that by passing legislation to bar Trump from office under the Fourteenth amendment.

  • TEACHERS COLLEGE: TAKE A STAND FOR REAL TEACHING AND LEARNING! NO AWARD FOR MERRYL TISCH
As public school teachers, we, the undersigned, are shocked to learn that one of the premiere institutions of teacher education, Teachers College at Columbia University, will give a “Medal for Distinguished Service” this year to the Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, Merryl Tisch. As Chancellor, Tisch has committed New York State’s public schools to high stakes testing, and has personally advocated for standardized test scores to be used for promotion, school closures, and teacher bonuses. These policies are devastating our schools and the teaching profession. Furthermore, we are extremely concerned that the current president of Teachers College, Susan Fuhrman, serves on the board of directors of Pearson PLC, one of the largest companies responsible for the development of high stakes standardized tests. Pearson’s $32 million contract with the New York State Education Department represents an unfortunate conflict of interest for President Fuhrman. Now, more than ever, we need Teachers College to stand for authentic teaching and learning, for child-centered curricula and assessments, and against the creeping privatization of our public schools. No award for Merryl Tisch!

  • Save Neighborhood Gym Crunch!
Crunch Fitness at 5100 Wisconsin Ave NW — open for 15 years, beloved by 1,200 members — is being closed by Onelife Fitness on April 15 with less than 30 days notice. Even the gym's own manager didn't know until corporate representatives arrived unannounced to deliver the news. This is not a story of a struggling gym. Crunch has approximately 1,200 members, consistently receives the highest ratings in the Onelife network for friendliness and cleanliness, and continues to attract new members. Onelife is closing it anyway — not because it is failing, but because a smaller gym no longer fits their corporate growth model. The building's owner, Donohoe, wants a gym in this space and has offered reduced rent. The Friendship Heights Alliance supports keeping a gym here. The community is organized and fighting. We are asking Onelife and 26North Partners to reverse this decision — or at minimum grant a 180-day extension through October 15, 2026 to allow the community to find a solution. We are also asking Donohoe to bring the full weight of their investment in this neighborhood to bear in finding a new operator.

  • Urge Gov. Abott to Enlist Texas in fight against Climate Change!
In response to Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, state governors from California, New York, and Washington have stepped up to lead where Trump has failed. These governors have launched a coalition committed to the carbon reduction efforts called for under the Paris Agreement, which has now been joined by a total of 12 states and Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, absent from this coalition is the Great State of Texas! Now as a Texan, that hurts my Texas pride! Texans should be standing up front leading this effort! Gov. Abbott: Enlist Texas in this new coalition and do everything possible to fight climate change.

  • Stop Chicken Construction - Study the Water
We ask for a complete stoppage of construction of new mega chicken houses in Delaware, Mayes and Adair Counties until the Roubidoux Aquifer and our air quality is studied. Our county roads are choked with big trucks as they build 172 houses for 19.6 million birds in Delaware County alone. Include: 1. Capacity assessment of the aquifers being tapped for chicken house wells, 2. Air quality standard and monitoring for homes surrounding the chicken houses, 3. Assurance chicken manure stays out of surface and groundwater within the watersheds which contain pristine waters. No new permits; review all recent permits; stop all construction.
