Bill O'Brien's statement that “It (Medicaid) is like any other government program: it doesn’t go away. You put the Medicaid needle into your arm... that addiction is not going to go away,” is disgraceful. We are a capitalist society. Therefore, our society can not operate without low paid workers. Today many people are employed part time or in low paying full time jobs and do not have healthcare insurance offered in these jobs. Additionally these low paid workers can not afford to purchase their own insurance. Let's break down the frivolous spending of someone making a pitiful $15,000 income or $1250 a month. If they are lucky they might be able to get an apartment for $800 a month. Maybe $120 a month for groceries. This person makes too much money for food stamps. Heat and Electric $300. That leaves $30 a month for anything else: Clothing, Medicine, Doctors Bills, Bus Fare. And they can't afford a automobile to travel any distance to work. For anyone who says we can not afford this, I would argue, we can't afford not to. Hospital emergency rooms are already overtaxed and it has been demonstrated that preventative care is more cost effective. This is beside the fact that the federal government is footing the bill for the time being. I would also argue that it is society's responsibility to take care of its own. These people work hard for a pittance. They deserve our support. Please vote against hb271. Thank you.
