  • Tell Congress Not To Gut Environmental Laws To Build New Highways
Are you someone who cares about preserving the last of our precious wild places? If you are, then you need to know that there is a bill in Congress which could lead to them being bulldozed to build new roads. The week of April 16, the U.S. House of Representatives will resume work on its transportation reauthorization bill, HR-7. I will not mince words This bill contains a number of provisions that would be disastrous for the environment. It would gut the protections made by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) with respect to transportation projects such as new roads. Among other things, this bill would:  Set an arbitrary deadline of 270 days for the completion of environmental reviews for new transportation projects. This is not nearly enough time to complete a thorough review. Any project not meeting this deadline would be automatically approved. The agency proposing the project would not have to do anything except run out the clock.  Eliminate environmental reviews altogether for transportation projects with a price tag of $10 million or less, or where the federal share of the project is less than 15%. This is an arbitrary limitation that would exempt smaller projects.  Severely limit public participation in the approval of any project. Anyone wishing to file a protest to a project would have to do so within 90 days of a decision. The deadline is currently 180 days.  The bill would prevent consideration of a large number of alternatives, such as no-build or the consideration of smart growth.  Exempt a large number of highway projects from environmental review altogether. For example, projects that are proposed within an existing right of way would be exempt. NEPA is one of our bedrock environmental laws, and it has been on the books for over forty years. It was passed in the early 1970s to ensure that projects sponsored by governments (federal, state or local) do not damage the environment. HR-7 would make this law almost meaningless with respect to transportation projects. Please call the office of your Representative in the US House of Representatives and ask him or her to oppose these provisions of HR-7. If you don’t know who your Representative is, go to www.house.gov and enter your zip code in the box in the upper right of the page. Or call 202-224-3121.

  • Remove Rush from the air waves in New Haven, CT
Rush Limbaugh's verbal assault on Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke, calling her a "slut" and a "prostitute," was intended to do one thing: intimidate women who would dare to speak out for their reproductive freedom. But this time Limbaugh has gone too far, and it has sparked a nationwide backlash. At least 140 major advertisers have pulled their ads from the Limbaugh show, and some stations have canceled the show altogether. Rush is still on the air in New Haven—but if enough local folks speak out together, that could change. We can't let up now. Therefore, we the people of New Haven are calling on WELI 960 in New Haven to take Limbaugh off the air for good.

  • We expect news media to inquire into candidates' core beliefs.
We the people expect our news media to fully research and report on the core beliefs of candidates for office as they bear on their performance of the responsibilities of such offices. The legitimate areas for such inquiry include beliefs on science and religion, on candidates' understanding of the boundaries between the two, and on the consequences of policy informed (or misinformed) by erroneous information.

  • Open Letter to Archbishop of New York, Timothy Cardinal Dolan
Gist of the Open Letter: To Your Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan We ask you to: 1. Reexamine how the USCCB is endangering the religious freedom of women by trying to restrict health insurance that covers contraception. 2. Remind Vatican agencies that have sharply criticized American nuns for focusing on the plight of the poor that their action endangers the Church’s commitment to social justice for the poor. 3. Remind all Catholics that critics of actions by the official Church leadership should be treated with respect and dialogue, not with attack and condemnation. A selection of the initiating signers include: Rev. • Monroe County: Just Say No to the New Voter ID Law
Sara May-Silfee, Monroe County's Director of Elections and Voter Registrations, we urge you to protect the integrity of elections in our County by joining with your counterparts in other counties across Pennsylvania and refuse to enforce the flawed new Voter ID law. Like similar laws across the nation, its proponents claim the purpose of the law is to prevent In-Person Voter Fraud. It is now well known that our new PA Voter ID law, like many recently enacted across the nation, was introduced not to stop voter fraud, but rather to disenfranchise minority, student and elderly voters. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of voters would be turned away from the polls in PA if it were to be enforced. Philadelphia election officials "expect a mess". It has just been established in a Pennsylvania State Court, that there has never been a single prosecution -- in fact, there has never even been an investigation -- of anyone, ever even attempting to commit in-person voter fraud in PA. Not one. Not Ever. Not in the entire the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
