Solidarity with Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde!
During a prayer service at Washington's National Cathedral following the inauguration, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde courageously spoke directly to President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance—seated in the front row—urging them to show compassion and care to the millions of Americans who are rightfully terrified.
The Bishop has faced an outlash following her moral stance, with President Trump going so far as to demand an apology for her compassionate plea, while conservative organizations and pastors pile on the attacks.
Add your name to the petition to counter the hate and thank Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde for her courageous act—and encourage other faith leaders to follow her lead!
Why is this important?
Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is the first woman to serve as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. The National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral the day after the inauguration is a longstanding tradition. Her sermon—attended by Trump and Vance along with their families—was grounded in the morals of her faith and shared values of compassion, care, and unity.
"There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives. The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings; who labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants; who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals, they – they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation. But the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors.”
Toward the end of her sermon, she stated: “God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land."
Her remarks have been met with backlash from conservative groups like Turning Point USA, whose co-founder Charlie Kirk took to social media to disparage the Bishop. Other conservative religious leaders have also jumped to vilify Bishop Budde.
When people bravely speak out against this administration, they need to know that we have their back. Bishop Budde exemplifies the courage we need to not be complacent in the face of power. Add your name to thank her and show your solidarity and support!
