Already, more than 60 other countries around the world inform their citizens if their food has been genetically engineered in a laboratory with simple labels. If these companies can label foods containing GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in Russia, China and South Africa, I believe they should label them in South Carolina as well.
Polls regularly show that more than 90% of Americans want labeling of genetically engineered foods, and a 2011 poll found that GMO labeling has broad bipartisan support. Join thousands of citizen advocates who are concerned about the food we are eating and feeding our families and have SC lead the way in support of GMO labeling.
Why is this important?
It's estimated that 70% of more of the foods in our grocery stores are or contain ingredients that are genetically modified. There is much controversy on the health effects of genetically modified foods. Packaged and canned foods currently are required to have ingredient and nutritional labeling. Why shouldn't consumers be informed if the food they buy, eat, and feed their children has been made in the laboratory? Join me in supporting labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms.
