Stop The Slippery Slope To Another War In Iraq

President Obama and Congress, stop the U.S. from sliding down the slippery slope to another war in Iraq. After more than a decade of conflict, America cannot afford another Iraq war.

The bombings put our nation at too much risk of mission creep, unintended consequences, and incremental escalation. There is no viable military solution to this crisis. Lasting and sustainable peace in Iraq requires an Iraqi-led political solution, not more American bombs.

Why is this important?

Today’s crisis in Iraq has its origins in the Bush Administration's disastrous decision to invade in 2003. As we continue to live with the consequences of those mistakes, we must recognize the hard reality that lasting and sustainable peace in Iraq can only be achieved with an Iraqi-led political solution. As President Obama has said, there is no viable military solution to this crisis.

That is why the recent bombing airstrikes launched in Iraq by U.S. military forces -- and the calls by some in Congress to escalate further -- are troubling. The risks of mission creep, unintended consequences, and incremental escalation are just too high. And after more than a decade of conflict, America cannot afford another Iraq war.

We must not repeat the same mistakes of the past nor forget the lessons of past military interventions that led to war, even with the sincerest intentions to keep them limited and brief.

We welcome President Obama’s swift decision to provide humanitarian aid to the innocent men, women, and children who have been trapped by this dangerous conflict. But if U.S. military intervention backfires and ignites another Iraq war, more civilians in Iraq would suffer -- along with American lives and interests.

For all these reasons, we urge the President and Congress to reject further U.S. military action in Iraq. Stop America from sliding down the slippery slope to war!
