Support GMO Labeling in Iowa
Join thousands of mothers, farmers and advocates in helping Iowa lead the way on labeling of genetically engineered foods, because we have a right to know what's in the food that we're eating and feeding our families.
Why is this important?
Genetic modification alters plant DNA by adding genes from other species to create crops with new and largely unknown effects on the environment and human health. Because of the uncertainties surrounding the safety of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), we feel that consumers should have a right to know whether or not their food has been genetically modified.
Two bills, H.F. 463 and S.F. 194, were introduced in the Iowa legislature to label genetically modified (also known as genetically engineered) foods and seed. The legislation would require consumer labeling information for food, providing penalties, and including effective date provisions on genetically modified food and make Iowa a leader in open, transparent and honest labeling of foods in the U.S. This legislation is also a stepping stone to encourage standardized, national labeling.
A recent scientific poll taken in Iowa indicated that 91.1% of people supported enacting a GMO labeling law, which is in line with national polls that regularly show that more than 90% of Americans want labeling of genetically engineered foods. Moreover, if you are included in the 91% of people in Iowa who support GMO labeling laws, we encourage you to sign the petition to stand strong for something you truly believe in!
