Tell the Department of Defense: Stop Banning Books in Schools!

The Department of Defense runs more than 160+ schools worldwide, educating nearly 66,000 children of military families and civilian employees each year.

Right now the Department of Defense Education Activity is pulling books from classroom shelves following a DoD directive to evaluate books “potentially related to gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology topics.”

The books in question? Actress Julianne Moore’s book “Freckleface Strawberry” about a child who learns to love her freckles, and Kathleen Krull’s “No Truth Without Ruth: The Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

This is censorship sanctioned by the federal government, and it’s coming at the expense of our children’s education and future. Books teaching children to love their differences, overcome challenges, and achieve their dreams should be celebrated—not banned.

Add your name to our petition to demand that taxpayer dollars not go toward the Department of Defense banning books!

Why is this important?

This wave of book bans is part of a widespread attempt by Donald Trump and his administration to censor free speech, silence diverse storytellers, and literally rewrite history.

Book challenges and bans have been on the rise, and they will only accelerate under the Trump administration. Last year PEN America reported that more than 10,000 books were banned in public schools—disproporationately from Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and AAPI authors, as well as books on LGBTQ+ topics, equity, and history.

And while the recent wave of book bans are being driven by MAGA Republicans and extreme groups like Moms for Liberty in communities, cities and states across the country, our federal government banning books takes it to another level.

When the government dictates what Americans can and can't read, democracy is at risk and we should all be concerned. Add your name to fight back NOW!
