We urge you to do the right thing for domestic violence survivors and all Maine residents: pass the bill banning people convicted of domestic violence from owning or possessing guns.
It's the right thing to do for the safety of everyone in our state.
Why is this important?
The Maine legislature is considering a bill (LD 600) to prevent people who have been convicted of domestic violence from owning or possessing a gun.
According to Rep. Richard Pickett, the bill's sponsor and a former police chief and state police detective, "50 percent or more of the homicides committed in Maine in most years are related to domestic violence."
While it should be a no-brainer, it's going to take a groundswell of public support to pass this bill to protect victims of domestic abuse from gun violence and save women's lives.
