Tell your Representative to stop Big Oil from destroying the Arctic!

Dear Representative,

I am concerned about Rep. Cole’s poison pill amendment to the fiscal year 2019 Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill. This provision would redirect a percentage of the revenue from oil and gas resource development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to private corporations.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to the Indigenous Gwich’in Nation, who consider the land sacred and rely on the porcupine caribou herd that uses the Refuge as their breeding ground. Fossil fuel development in this area would be devastating to their communities and to the fragile environment.

Rep. Cole’s amendment would further incentivize fossil fuel development in this region. This is unacceptable. Congress should take steps to protect the Arctic from drilling, not make it easier and more appealing for corporations to destroy it.

I urge you to oppose any fiscal 19 spending bill that includes provisions that would harm the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Thanks,

Why is this important?

Earlier this year, Trump took steps to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Big Oil. This would cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem and would devastate the Gwich’in people’s way of life.

Now, Republicans in Congress want to further incentivize drilling -- by increasing the revenue given to private corporations. Even worse, they’re trying to sneak this giveaway to Big Oil through the budget process, without public hearings or Congressional debate. We need your help to stop them!
