The Legalization of Marijuana in the state of Utah.
Marijuana should be legalized and heavily regulated in the state of Utah like other controlled substances like tobacco and alcohol.
Why is this important?
Much Like prohibition, which banned the sale of beverages that contained more than 1.28% alcohol, Marijuana is currently a prohibited substance in the United states or America. 52% of all drug arrests in 2010 were for marijuana. Assuming these statistics were talking about arrests made for solely marijuana and not other factors that number is very high. But if we assume a portion of the number involved much more, the number is still significant. Many citizens who would be average law-abiding individuals have been incriminated by the current laws and thus brought unneeded trouble and stress to both citizen and government. If Marijuana was regulated like tobacco and alcohol is now days the government would be able to use the taxes for the betterment of its citizens. For example, in the Fiscal year 2010 the Federal excise brought the U.S. government about 15.5 billion dollars in revenue. This is a significant amount of money. To the comparison of prohibition, when the law was put in place, its original intent was to reduce crime, corruption, solve social problems and help the general health of the public. It failed. A couple of the ideas that promoted the law in fact back fired, for instance crime was not reduced but rose. Although there is much stipulation and controversy on the impact of marijuana on people’s health, alcohol and tobacco are also very unhealthy drugs that are legal and regulated. Although problems exist with alcohol and tobacco, and will arise with marijuana. As a whole the citizens will benefit from this legislation.
