The University of Colorado Boulder Should Address The Climate Crisis

In light of the global climate crisis, we the members of the Boulder community demand that the Administration of the University of Colorado (CU) meet the following demands:
1) That the Chancellors of the four CU campuses declare a climate emergency.
2) That CU Boulder’s 80% GHG reduction goal by 2050 be updated to 100% carbon neutrality by 2050.
3) That the University of Colorado Foundation provide transparency with regards to how CU’s Endowment is invested.
4) That Regent Lesley Smith’s proposal regarding system-wide sustainability be developed and adopted in close collaboration with students and community members.

Why is this important?

The catastrophic and human-caused consequences of ecological negligence have resulted in prospects that are growing darker for the survival of humanity with each passing day. Responding to the global climate crisis will require transformation of economic systems at every level from the individual to the local, to the global.

The University of Colorado (CU) Boulder is perhaps the institution with the greatest potential to affect change in Boulder. The students and the members of the Boulder community are impassioned by the lack of urgency with which CU’s Administration is approaching the climate crisis. Working toward its solutions not only will secure the livelihoods of our grandchildren and great grandchildren, it also represents the greatest business opportunity of our time.

We the members of the Boulder community therefore submit a petition to the Administration of CU Boulder to demand their action on the climate crisis.
