Trump’s bigotry and racism show it's time to begin impeachment proceedings

Donald Trump’s repeated and blatant racism and bigotry show his contempt for the Constitution and equal rights for all people.

Trump claims that he loves our country but attacks its diversity, blatantly disregards our Constitution, and directs hatred against those who demand a more equitable and just society. It doesn’t seem like Trump loves this country very much after all, or the people in it. We will not be a country where political leaders incite violence against their opponents based on their background or their political ideals.

I challenge this President to focus on the issues and a policy agenda not rooted in hate, division, and violence.

This administration has attacked communities of color across this country, used racist language that has incited violence and more hate speech, and sided with white supremacists again and again. We cannot let this stand. Just this month, he attacked me and my fellow members of Congress with explicitly racist provocations. This is just the latest manifestation of his ideology and bigoted worldview, which is not only morally wrong but also drives him to violate our Constitution. He has no respect for the laws of our land, obstructs justice, enriches himself with his office, and now he’s demonstrating his disrespect for our country again with his racist incitement of violence and hatred.

He is not fit to be president of this country, and the impeachment inquiry that is long overdue must begin now

Why is this important?

Trump’s attacks on communities of color have been relentless. His policies have targeted immigrant communities, Muslims, Black people, and people of other marginalized faiths and identities.

He initiated and enforced the Muslim Ban, which is actively keeping Muslims from entering this country, and violating our constitutional right to equal protection under the law.

He is caging brown and Black people at the border, and putting asylum-seekers through hellish, inhumane conditions—violating our constitutional right to due process.

He is separating children from their parents at the border, with no timeline for any reunification, violating our Constitution’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.

He is calling for increased ICE raids, making sure that every one of the 11 million undocumented people in this country lives in incessant fear for their families and their livelihoods.

His attacks on me and my fellow Members of Congress, who are also women of color, are simply a small manifestation of his bigoted ideology. Recently, Trump attacked me and my fellow Members of Congress on Twitter, telling us to “go back” to where we came from. And at a campaign rally, his supporters serenaded him with chants of “Send Her Back!”

Any person of color in this country has heard these words at some point in their lives.

And yet, each of us are from this country. This place is our home. People of color are woven into the fabric of this country, and we belong here. Many Americans are immigrants, but Trump doesn't hate all immigrants—only if they're not white.

Trump has made it his personal vendetta to actively attack communities of color across this country, whether by words or policy. The comments he made against me and Reps. Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are just the tip of the iceberg in reflecting his racist and bigoted ideology. What is ultimately more harmful and dangerous: his policymaking.

We cannot allow this to be normalized in America. If we do nothing, we set a dangerous precedent.

This country belongs to all of us. It is our home, and no racist president can take that away from us. That's among the many reasons why my fellow Members of Congress need to step up and begin impeachment proceedings, starting with opening an impeachment inquiry. In addition to his obstruction of justice and abuses of power, Trump’s racism and white supremacy translated into policy warrant impeachment—which were also rationales for impeachment articles against Andrew Johnson in 1868.

For the people living in fear under this racist and xenophobic administration, we cannot wait one more day to hold Trump accountable.
