Universal Background Checks for Guns of All Sizes

The state of Pennsylvania currently requires gun purchasers to undergo criminal background checks only if they are buying a handgun — excluding long guns such as shotguns and assault rifles.

A new bill, H.B. 1010, would extend the background check requirement to long guns as well. Its important that we work to ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.

The bill only applies to pistols or revolvers with a barrel length of less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18 inches, any rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches or any firearm with an overall length of less than 26 inches and will take effect in 60 days.

Why is this important?

I support lawful gun ownership. I also believe that anyone who wants to purchase a gun as listed above should pass a background check to ensure that they meet the criteria established by the Commonwealth for such purchase.

I feel this is the best way to assure that guns go to people who will use them lawfully and safely and to reduce the risk of criminals or those with mental illness or any other restrictions that have already been imposed for revolver ownership by the legislature.
