Walmart: Create a Coronavirus Task Force with Worker Representation

Walmart needs to make drastic changes to protect Walmart workers as well as the public. We are calling on Walmart to join together with hourly workers, health experts, and community and public policy leaders as part of an emergency COVID-19 Taskforce. Workers need to be part of coming up with solutions and guiding Walmart’s response to this global pandemic. Walmart needs to set up a coronavirus task force that gives hourly employees a voice.

Why is this important?

Retail and grocery workers are taking big risks right now to serve our communities, putting their own health on the line to make sure we’re all able to get what we need to continue our lives.
But Walmart is failing its 1.5 million workers, despite us being deemed “essential.”
Thousands of Walmart workers have contracted COVID-19 and at least 21 have died. Workers are staffing stores every day with little protections and precautions other than a vest, mask, and some plexiglass at the registers. Meanwhile, Walmart is making record profits while continuing to avoid responsibility and pay poverty wages.
Enough is enough. Walmart can’t continue to put the lives of its workers—and those of the communities that we serve—at risk to further its bottom line. Workers deserve a voice in Walmart’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. The corporation needs to immediately set up a coronavirus task force that includes hourly workers, health experts, and community and public policy leaders.
