We seek a Presidential Proclamation proclaiming January as "Support Group Awareness Month"
We would be most grateful if you would please consider helping more Americans to become aware of the many different member-run support groups that are available to them in communities across the Nation. Self-help support groups are peer-run, community mutual aid groups that provide needed social support, practical information, education, and empowerment for those facing a wide variety of life hardships. Groups address almost every illness, disability, addiction, bereavement situation, parenting problem, caregiver concern, abuse, or other stressful life situation. Would you, therefore, please consider issuing a Presidential Proclamation proclaiming January as "Support Group Awareness Month"? It would help educate people to these neglected but helpful community resources.
Why is this important?
Support groups are empowering and cost effective community resources, that have been shown to decrease the need for professional services for at-risk populations, while also reducing recidivism for those who receive professional treatment. Groups enhance coping skills and enable their members to enjoy a better quality of life, even as older members help newer ones.
