There are over 15 million refugees from war. Many have risked their lives to escape. Too many have drowned. The US has offered to take a tiny fraction.
The US has a great tradition of welcoming immigrants. Most of us are descendants of refugees. The Syrian refugees offer a great opportunity to uphold this tradition.
Let's show our American heritage by welcoming 100,000 refugees.
Why is this important?
As a former Foreign Service Officer I know that the greatest obstacle is the year long delay in getting security clearances--almost impossible with a war going on. Let's speed up the process by giving US consular officials In Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq authority to admit those with no obvious risk.
