What makes this strategy different than previous failures?

Before the United States engages in further military action, I want you to answer my question: How is our military and non-military approach to this attack to be more effective in stopping violence and providing safety to citizens than our previous invasions and conflicts in the Middle East and other extremist Muslim factions?

Why is this important?

If we haven't learned something significant from previous mistakes in our strategy toward global terrorism, then why continue putting military personnel and citizens at risk waging an ineffective war?
