Stop Trump’s racist World Cup immigration policies
The World Cup is the largest international sporting event outside of the Olympics. Athletes, staff, referees and others wait their whole lives to be able to participate. For fans it's a way to meet people from different cultures and express national pride.
Now, Trump’s anti-immigrant policies are dashing those dreams.
The Trump administration has an unjust travel ban against 39 countries, multiple of those countries are playing in the World Cup which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico this year.
Already we’ve seen players, staff, and referees detained and subjected to hours long questioning by Customs and Border Patrol agents at airports and in some cases refused entry altogether.
The Iranian national team wasn’t allowed to stay in their previously arranged accommodations in Arizona and were forced to stay in Mexico, with the United States only allowing them entry on days they’re competing.
Fans from majority Muslim and African nations have either had their visas revoked or are unable to get visas at all, often after they’ve already paid for World Cup tickets and booked airfare and hotel rooms.
Why is this important?
This chaos is the direct result of Donald Trump’s racist and discriminatory immigration policies that are now playing out on the world stage.
The World Cup is the largest international sporting event outside of the Olympics and it’s supposed to bring people together, across cultures to share in joy. Instead, it turned into confusion and heartbreak.
If this is how the Trump administration is treating world class athletes, how do we think he’s treating everyday people?
All World Cup visas must be restored ASAP while there’s still time.
