Wyoming senator should support bill to remove sexual-assault prosecution from the chain of command
Having served in the military before he was elected, Senator Mike Enzi certainly cares deeply about the challenges facing our servicewomen, servicemen, and veterans. That's the reason other veterans, like Senators Richard Blumenthal, Tom Carper, and Tom Harkin, are supporting a bill that would remove military sexual-assault prosecutions from the chain of command. But Sen. Enzi hasn't yet declared his support for a reform proposed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand that could secure justice for the thousands of survivors who have been assaulted while serving their country. Let's make clear to Sen. Enzi that he belongs among the more than 30 senators who have announced their support, including fellow Republicans such as Rand Paul and Ted Cruz.
Why is this important?
Having watched the documentary Invisible War and read of the tens of thousands of victims of sexual assault in the armed forces, I urge everyone to take a stand in support of these victims and to put an end to future assaults without penalty. The fact that an estimated 26,000 military personnel, both men and women, experienced some form of sexual harassment or worse last year clearly indicates that commanders are not providing for good order and discipline in their units.
