The US government told all Americans within 50 miles of Fukushima to evacuate, when the Fukushima disaster occured. Many of our reactors are operating beyond the period they were designed for. On site back-up power is not sufficient for major outages. Unprotected on-site storage of tons of radioactive waste have great potential to cause harm if attacked. Realistic evacuation plans are needed.
Why is this important?
This a life and death issue for US citizens.
Both the west and east coasts are at risk for a major earthquake. Major solar storms that can shut entire electrical grids are predicted for the next year and a half. Evacuation plans have not been updated to include population growth and on-site storage of radioactive waste.
