A call to President-Elect Trump to Stand by American Women
Demand that the President-Elect back up his apologies with action
Why is this important?
This petition addresses the stress and trauma triggered by the vile rhetoric, particularly directed towards women, coming out of the presidential campaign. Elected officials need to take responsibility for their language and be aware of the impact it has.
We hear from the softening tone of your rhetoric, and some of your language, that you are trying to extend the olive branch, after a particularly divisive presidential campaign. In the spirit and words of David Chappelle, President-Elect Trump, I propose the following: We are willing to give you a chance to govern, and we, as a historically disenfranchised segment of the population – women – demand that you give us one, too.
We remind you that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote and those of us who voted for her are waiting and watching to see if you will, in fact, unify the nation. You should know that millions of women have been online discussing with each other various experiences with sexual trauma ranging from verbal harassment, groping, assault, to rape at gunpoint. These women –millions of voters—are also discussing the way that the violent rhetoric coming from you and your campaign re-traumatized them, as well as the release of the recordings in which you brag to Billy Bush about sexually assaulting women. One woman even reported that a stranger grabbed her crotch while yelling: “You’ve been Trumped”. I hope that you find this crime, done in your name, as repulsive as the rest of us do and will denounce it.
You did apologize and we are willing to take that apology to heart if we see action to support it. As the leader of the free world, we expect that you do not want to embolden those who would continue to assault women; those who feel as though your words have given them permission to grab whomever they want, without consent, when they feel like it.
Women who have survived sexual assault and have been re-traumatized listening not only to your so-called “locker room talk” -- even justifying it as such -- add up to millions of voters who need to see that you, as the leader of the free world, denounce the hateful and vindictive language that they are now encountering when sharing their stories. As your opponent said, President-Elect Trump, words matter. Now your words matter more then ever, and you need to be mindful of the messages that you send out, as they will reflect upon our nation as a whole.
You can back up your apology by supporting, creating policy, securing funds for the following:
• Protect Planned Parenthood: Stop the witch-hunt. Planned Parenthood provides medical care for millions of American citizens.
• Protect Roe v. Wade: Nothing is more personal than the decision whether or not to keep a baby. The greater majority of Americans support having safe and legal access to abortion and thus, this should be reflected in your policies. It’s illogical to demand “less government” and then allow government regulation into our bedrooms. Seriously, would you want your daughter to have to resort to an illegal, unsafe abortion?
• Enact Policy to Protect Women from Sexual Violence: Provide support and resources to agencies that offer legal, medical, and recovery support to victims of such abuse.
• Appoint cabinet members who support these policies and laws.
As First Lady, Melania Trump, can take on a crucial role in helping you heal the wounds inflicted by the divisive and harmful political rhetoric coming out of your campaign.
