Add Fracked Areas to Methane Mapping
The development of natural gas across our country has led to an increasing number of large infrastructure projects, impacting many people. There are important questions about this development in regard to climate change. In a recent partnership between the Environmental Defense Fund and Google Earth Outreach, methane leaks were mapped as a way to address methane, a potent greenhouse gas. We request that as a part of this mapping, that you include areas that are being subjected to natural gas drilling and infrastructure. In order to address the full issue of methane as a greenhouse gas, we have to include the process of natural gas extraction. We strongly urge you to expand your program to include heavily fracked communities such as Susquehanna and Washington counties in Pennsylvania. We also would like to petition Google maps to include in their data, well pads, compressor stations, and pipelines. This is critical information that should be public knowledge. As renowned conservationist Rachel Carson said, “It is the public that is being asked to assume the risks. The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road and it can only do so when in full possession of the facts…” Please help us in our efforts to uncover the facts.
Why is this important?
Transparency is imperative if we as a global community are going to address climate change. I come from a family of organic farmers who seek truth and justice, for all.
